ABSTRACT:
In this paper ultrasonic guided waves generated by surface bonded piezoelectric wafer transducers (PWTs) are deployed to identify localised corrosion in steel bars, which is simulated in the laboratory using the impressed current method. It is observed that flexural mode F(1,1) has high sensitivity to the corrosion in simple steel bars as well as embedded steel reinforcement bars (rebars). The variation of group velocity of F(1,1) mode for various level corrosion is studied. Group velocity has direct linear correlation with the mass loss in steel bars while corrosion in embedded rebars has a complex nature. However, various phases of corrosion in embedded steel rebars can still be interpreted using the change in wave velocity.
