ABSTRACT:

Stainless steel materials have a high potential to be applied to high-durability structures, owing to their superior corrosion resistance. However, there is a lack of efficient fastener connection, such as slip-resistant connection, in stainless steel structures. Conventional surface treatments fail to obtain sufficient slip factors on stainless steel plates, owing to a passive film on their surface. An innovative anti-slipping concept has been proposed, which uses embedded particles in stainless steel plate surfaces. An experimental investigation has demonstrated that the proposed concept is valid and feasible to improve anti-slipping properties of stainless steel slip-resistant connection. A non-linear finite element model for stainless steel connected plate embedding one particle was developed in this paper and validated against previous experimental results. The validated model was then used to examine the influence of different particle diameters and different plate thickness on anti-slipping properties. By studying the three-dimensional strain distributions in the plate, a suitable particle diameter for a plate and distance between two particles can be determined.
