ABSTRACT:

A new type of all-bolted steel frame system with intermediate column friction damper (thereafter known as IC-ABSF) has been proposed and 1-story 1 bay 0.65 scaled plane frame testing substructure has been designed, as well as the pseudo-dynamic and quasi-static experiments has been carried out. In this paper, numerical simulation by using finite element analysis method (thereafter known as FEA) adopting software ABAQUS to investigate the mechanic behavior and seismic performance of IC-ABSF was completed, which results such as the hysteretic curves, skeleton curves and strain variation were researched and compared with those from the test. The results of the experimental and FEA were in coincidence relatively and the frame possessed the same favorable seismic performance and mechanical behavior as the rigid frame did. With the installation of the intermediate columns with friction dampers, not only the lateral stiffness of the frame can be enhanced as well as the inter-story drift can be controlled effectively, the energy dissipating capacity of the frame structure can be enhanced and the plasticity development both in frame beam and column can be controlled.
