ABSTRACT:

This paper presents a cable-stayed arch (CSA) that is formed through imposing in-plane cables and stays to a steel arch. It is obvious that CSAs significantly improve their overall stiffness and load-carrying capacities over conventional arches and the cable arches (CAs). The linear and non-linear elastic buckling as well as load resistance of the pin-ended CSAs are investigated numerically by taking a typical example of the CSA with the span of 50m and the rise-to-span ratios of 0.3 and 0.4. It is found that the ultimate load of the CSA subjected to half-span vertical uniformly distributed load is approximately 80% larger than CA’s. Moreover, a parametric study regarding the number of the stays, the positions of the hub, the numbers of cables and the cross-sectional area of cable has been conducted on the CSAs. As a result, the optimal numbers of stays is obtained, being dependent on the hub positions and the numbers of cables. At last, it is recommended that the cross-sectional area of a single cable is taken as 5%~10% of the arch rib in order to attain an economical design.
