SEISMIC BEHAVIOUR OF STAINLESS STEEL BOLTED EXTENDED END PLATE JOINTS

ABSTRACT:

In this work, five full-scale stainless steel bolted extended end plate joints were tested under cyclic loading to study their the seismic behaviour. All the joints were made up of Grade S31608 (EN 1.4401) stainless steel welded I-sections, with I-300×200×8×12 for the beam and I-290×250×12×16 for the column, respectively. Joints using four different types of bolt were tested, including galvanized high strength bolts of Grades 10.9 and 8.8, and austenitic stainless steel bolts of Grade A4-70 and A4-80. End plates of different thicknesses (16mm and 20mm) were also tested. The experimental setup, loading protocol and instrumentation employed in the tests were presented. The obtained test results are reported, including hysteresis curves and the failure modes of the tested joints. It is observed that hysteresis curves of all specimens show sliding and pinching to some extent, especially for connections with stainless steel bolts or thin end plates. The hysteresis curves of the connections with stainless steel bolts are Z-shaped and the energy dissipation is about 40% lower than for connections with high strength bolts.
