ABSTRACT:
Modern shopping mall design generally consists of many features, including large open space for easy arrangement of shops and functions, irregular floor plan for modern fancy appearance, and structural unfavorable floor openings for escalators and skylights improving customer experience. All these special features are great challenges for structural design especially in intensive seismic zone. This paper introduces the design of a large shopping mall project in Kunming, one of the most intensive seismic area in China. This paper discusses the principle of structural system selection for large space buildings. In this project, a new type of shear-yield metal damper and energy-dissipation shear wall system have been developed and applied to minimize the structural member sizes. This paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of different energy dissipation systems, and explains the adoption of the shear-yield metal damper. The design principle, analysis methodology and experimental results of this new damper are also discussed in the paper. Finally, the paper summarizes the design principles on how different design targets could be well achieved and balanced.
